Shipping Small Orders from China: Courier Costs, Trade Terms & How to Save
Small apparel orders face the harshest shipping math. A manufacturer explains courier vs air vs sea, EXW/FOB/DDP in plain words, and four ways first-time buyers cut freight cost.
Nobody warns first-time brands about shipping. Your goods are quoted, your sample was perfect — and then the freight quote arrives and it is bigger than the invoice. Small orders get the worst shipping math in the industry. Here is how it works, and how to make it work for you.
Why small orders pay more per piece
Freight has a floor: pickup, export clearance, line-haul, import clearance, delivery. Whether the box holds 50 hijabs or 5,000, most of that floor stays the same. Spread across 50 pieces, it hurts; across 5,000, it disappears.
Hijabs, leggings and activewear are light but bulky — you often pay for volume, not weight. That is why concentrating your first order into fewer styles saves freight twice: fewer boxes, more value per box.

EXW, FOB, DDP — in plain words
- EXW (Ex Works): you arrange everything from the factory door onwards. Cheapest on paper, most work for you.
- FOB (Free on Board): we deliver to the Chinese port and clear export; you take over on the ship. For sea freight buyers with a forwarder.
- DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): with us, DDP simply means the courier cost plus the estimated duties for your country, quoted together — you just receive the parcel.

Four ways to cut your freight bill
- Concentrate the order — fewer styles, full cartons. Half-empty boxes are the #1 self-inflicted cost.
- Ask us to quote freight before you pay — goods + freight together is the only number that matters. We do this on every quote.
- Watch the customs line — markets differ: some tax by declared value, others by weight or volume. We declare and pack accordingly, and tell you what to expect at your door.
- Plan re-orders on a schedule — combining orders into one shipment cuts per-piece freight dramatically. Tell us your restock rhythm and we will plan shipments around it.
